Junior Curriculum

Building Strong Foundations

At Kinross Wolaroi School, we pride ourselves on being one of the top-performing primary schools in the region, offering a comprehensive education that focuses on individualised teaching and holistic development.

With small class sizes, tailored learning programs, and dedicated support staff, we ensure each student receives the attention they need to excel. Our well-rounded approach includes strong numeracy and literacy programs, robust wellbeing initiatives, and inclusive parent education.

Additionally, our students benefit from learning French, which opens doors to global opportunities. Join us in nurturing confident, capable learners prepared for lifelong success.

Enhanced Junior Learning

At Kinross Wolaroi School, we believe in providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics, with a wide range of programs that foster the holistic development of our students.

Literacy & Numeracy

It is for good reason that the Junior School recently achieved status as one of the top performing primary schools in the region for its five year average on NAPLAN. With a focus on data analysis across both individual students and cohorts, the school implements tailored learning across the curriculum.

Individualised Teaching

With average Junior School class sizes of 20 students, our teachers have the time and capability to modify daily learning tasks to accommodate the specific needs of their students; small adjustments that can make a big difference.

Learning Enhancement

Personalised learning support from a full-time educator and in-class staff ensures individual attention for students needing tailored programs for improvement or extra challenges. The school also offers speech and language support through access to a speech therapist during class. These programs provide invaluable support to families, benefiting students' early learning and offering long-term advantages as they progress through school.

Parent Education

Across all of our key programs for students, we make the time to also educate our parents – whether it be our literacy and numeracy programs or wellbeing strategies, by including and educating parents through face-to-face seminars and online workshops we ensure that you have a thorough understanding of what happens at school.

Language

French is our Junior School language because it is one of the world's fastest-growing languages and an official UN language. Learning French enriches students through its historical, artistic, and musical contributions and serves as a gateway to other languages. It is easy for English-speaking students to learn, boosting confidence. French is taught from Year 3 and can continue through Year 12.

Wellbeing

With a focus on the whole child, the UR Strong program reinforces inclusive social behaviour amongst our students. It is part of larger wellbeing philosophy that seeks to create a sense of belonging in the classroom and among peers.

Key Learning Areas

As identified by the NSW Board of Studies, the six identified Key Learning Areas for Kindergarten to Year 6 include:

English

Students develop the skills to read widely with comprehension and enjoyment. We teach your child to spell accurately and express themselves in a range of writing styles. All students learn the function of language and how to listen and communicate effectively in diverse situations.

Mathematics

Students focus on skills such as inquiry, investigation, design, and problem-solving. Your child will develop knowledge and understanding of both natural and modified environments, as well as how people interact with these settings.

Science & Technology

Science and Technology allows students develop skills in enquiry, investigation, design, and problem-solving. Your child will gain knowledge and understanding of natural and modified environments, as well as how people interact with these surroundings.

Human Society & Its Environment

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of Australia’s history, geography, social institutions, and its place in the world. Your child will also have opportunities to explore and appreciate the religious and moral beliefs of other cultures.

Creative Arts

Starting in Kindergarten, students are introduced to a comprehensive music program that nurtures their musical journey. We offer a variety of ensemble groups, including band, strings, chamber, percussion, and choir, catering to all musical passions. Specialised music teachers provide on-site private lessons in instruments, singing, speech, and drama, with flexible scheduling available before, after, or during the school day.

The skills learned in these lessons are put to use in our various ensembles, which practice and perform at concerts, eisteddfods, and special events throughout the year.

PDHPE

PDHPE focuses on developing an active, healthy lifestyle, teaching your child essential skills for building positive relationships, along with fostering values, attitudes, and beliefs.

Regular physical activity is a key component of the program, with sport being compulsory from Year 3 and strongly encouraged in the earlier years. We believe that a healthy body supports a healthy mind, and our students embrace this through their active participation in a wide range of sports, promoting well-being and fitness.
